It’s like I’m in an episode of House…

Kim

The good news is that Kim’s going to be fine.

The bad news is I can’t believe my cat caused this.

One little scratch in the webbing between Kim’s thumb and first finger led to surgery because of infection.

One doctor told me that if we’d waited a couple more days she would have been at risk to loose her hand.

Cinco de Mayo

May 5th, 2010 | by alan

True story:

I was chatting with someone the other day and asked them what they were doing for Cinco de Mayo.

Their response: ya, uh, when is that?

This is the kind of e-mail I have to send from time to time…

March 18th, 2010 | by alan

Hello,

My name is Alan O.W. Barnes, and I am an American New Media Producer and Educator.

Unfortunately, because my name is Alan Barnes, and I do a lot of writing, I am often confused online with Alan Barnes, one of your authors who wrote the book Tarantino A to Zed: The Films of Quentin Tarantino.

This student contacted me for an interview, thinking I was your Alan Barnes.

Hello,
My name is D— C–. I am a sophomore Honors English student attending Amador Valley High School in the Bay Area. My English teacher recently assigned a research paper in which we must pick a person who we feel has changed the world (or part of it) most significantly. For my topic, I have chosen Quentin Tarantino. As part of the project, we must interview a professional on our topic, which is where you fit in. I would like to have your permission to ask you 10-15 questions about Mr. Tarantino’s impact on the movie industry. Your help in my project is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advanced.
D— C–

Can you help her get in touch with the right Alan Barnes (the British author)?

Thanks in advance,
Alan OW Barnes

(I removed the students name as I have not asked their permission to post this)

Photoshop project for class

January 22nd, 2010 | by alan

The assignment was to compile photos and treat them using techniques discussed in class to make them look as though they belong together.

I used it as an excuse to mess with my idea for combining the techniques of Alex Maleev and Dave McKean, but I wish I’d had time to take the photos myself.

Art School…second term

January 21st, 2010 | by alan

Sorry it’s been a while since the last post…

Been busy. Trying to figure out if my current 5 year plan can possibly work.

Right now it feels like all I do is draw, and write.

Here’s something I did last week.

The latest 3D project

November 2nd, 2009 | by alan

Yea, I know I’ll never be a sculptor, but this class is almost over.

This week’s assignment: create a surrealist ‘poem object’.

What is a poem object?

I’m not really sure there is a clear answer to that, but the exercise was to attempt to place unrelated, emotionally charged objects in a box allowing an observer to make up their own story about what the arrangement of objects means.

My wife was outraged “That better not be my teddy!” she swore at me in horror when she saw the piece.

Ancient History

October 23rd, 2009 | by alan

Today I was teaching advanced studio recording at the Art Institute.

My class was mixing the Def Leopard tune “Rock of Ages”.

As the students were working I mentioned that the tune was popular when I was in the 4th grade.

One of the students responded “It’s that old?”

…Thanks dude.

Twilight

October 21st, 2009 | by alan

I’m in Boarders Books browsing the graphic novels section and I notice two 6-year-old girls looking at the ‘Twilight’ display nearby.

“Have you read Twilight?” one asks the other.

“No, but I know a 3rd grader who’s read them all” the other replies.

The first 6-year-old looks at her friend with deep seriousness “Those books are totally inappropriate for her”.

Ouch!

Music School is Over, Art School has Begun!

October 19th, 2009 | by alan

So I was in the woodshop working on this constructivist sculpture (ugh, 3D design is the thing I’m doing that is the least related to sequential art: what I’m there for. But the teacher is really great) and another student spoke to me.

“I don’t know what it is, but it’s awesome!” he said as he passed by.

“Hey thanks”, I replied “What are you working on?”

“Stainless steel Wolverine claws”.

Only at Art school…
